Reading Response to: “Lumps and Splits”

The “tree structure” is broken in the third order.  It is not physical so physics don’t apply to the “order” of miscellaneous.  Clear as day.

“the better your children at Twenty Questions, the more unprepared they’re likely to be… (in) college” – true.   The structure of 20 categories that child is learning is limiting and not going to work with the rest of the world “categories.”  Otherwise we wouldn’t be talking here on the blog…  So, those 20 categories are a list.  List is a metadata, and the items under their heading make up a “distinctive formating” called “nesting.

Humans categorize everything.  The list of categories Plato describes things by their form, Aristotle by their definition.  And that is true, because each category may have additional subcategory, whereas forms are all slightly different.  These “lumps and splits” to an individual level (or as book describes it a leaf on t a tree).  Aristotle also theorized that these trees are representative of a cosmos structure.  The very universe is categorized this way.

Digital form is not physical, therefore, it does not submit to the laws of physics… The tree form in a digital realm should be able to arrange itself to match the needs of a searcher.  The faceted classification system, as Weinberg writes, is that tree…  I like how towards the end, after describing the system of Colon Classification, author compares people as “data squirrels, jumping from branch to branch… and wherever we jump, a branch magically appears.”  Since the dawn of “civilization” we try to bend space and time, to “make sense of the world we live in.”  In the third order “knowledge does not have shape.”
